Remember nu rave? Well that was soooo 2007 and the guys who introduced us all to that phase have returned in a supposedly more “mature and sobered up” state.
After scrapping many attempts at album number two, nearly going their seperate ways, and taking a few weeks out to indulge in a drug called Ayahusea (to retrieve the creativity back into their minds, so they say) Surfing The Void was finally completed and here it is! But in comparison to Myths of The Near Future that creativity is lacking and it fails to deliver the same catchiness as their debut.
It’s not all doom and gloom though. If there is one thing The Klaxons never fail to achieve it’s the ability to produce energetic, glowstick waving, psychedelic rock songs unique to the same old indie acts out there at the moment. Stand out tracks on the album include ‘The Same Space’, the roaring sounds of ‘Flashover’, the darker more haunting tones of ‘Venusia’ and ‘Twin Flames’ with it’s slightly repetetive chorus sticking thoroughly inside the heads of those who listen to it. Of course, we can’t forget ‘Echoes’ which is definitely the most grown up and progressed track out of the lot.
So overall Surfing The Void is a grower and it may not be the best follow up we were hoping for but it’s definitely not over, not over, not over yet (see what I did there?) for the band and another few years of non-stop touring is no doubt just around the corner.
