Single: The Cribs – Housewife

Ignore the Ignorant, though seemingly brilliant at the time, soon wore out of the general public’s concern perhaps quicker than expected, with some fans, once the initial hubbub died down, denouncing guitar legend Johnny Marr’s presence in the band. Yes, it does seem the award-bashing, perma-bleeding antics of the Jarman brothers has long died away, but there’s still surprisingly little on ‘Housewife’ to trouble the neighbours.

It’s a fine enough single, the intro especially baring enough theatrics and pomp to rival David Bowie’s ‘Heroes’, and Marr once again gets to showcase his unrivalled ways with the Gretsch, but ultimately the chorus doesn’t resonate like ‘I’m a Realist’ or ‘Mirror Kissers’, but then again, The Cribs can turn anything into gold and by the end ‘Housewife’ does make its stamp, but is far from their best. But as a one-off single, should we expected anything more, really?

Probably best to stick to ‘Don’t You Wanna Be Relevant’.
